Single dose grinders with large 83mm burrs are usually a pretty pricey investment, with many models costing over $2000. Until now that is. With the new Turin DF83 single dose grinder, you can have an affordable 83mm flat burr grinder for the price that a lot of much smaller burr grinders go for.

Low Retention Single Dosing

The uniquely designed burr chamber allows coffee to be quickly and efficiently, and is very low retention even without the use of bellows. With many other single dose grinders, there is a decent amount that remains in the chamber and has to be removed by using a bellows. With the DF83, during numerous tests the amount that remains behind without bellows is very minimal. We do still recommend using the bellows at the end of each grind session with the burrs still spinning in order to keep the burr chamber as clean as possible at all times, but it usually won’t remove much.

83mm Stainless Steel Flat Burrs, Upgradable to Titanium, or SSP

Stainless steel burrs are the standard design, but we have the option to upgrade to Titanium or to a few SSP burr options. For further information on SSP burrs and which one is best for you, check out our SSP burr pages.

Hopper

The DF83 can also be used with a hopper if you prefer not to single dose or if you have a larger amount of coffee you want to grind, such as for cold brew or if you want to use this grinder in your business environment.

Wave Spring Washer

Unlike the DF64 which uses springs to hold the top burr carrier in place, the Turin DF83 uses a wave spring washer. While the springs work for the narrower DF64, the wave spring washer design works better for the wider DF83. With the wave spring washer design, taking the top burr off can be done by simply unscrewing the top burr collar.

Painted Aluminum Body

For a premium look and feel, the high quality metal body of the DF83 is beautifully painted in either a black or white finish. The finish is similar to the design of the Turin DF64E or DF64P, but is different from the Turin DF64 original, which is vinyl wrapped aluminum.

Holder for Dosing Cup or Portafilter

As with all the Turin DF64 variations, the Turin DF83 will hold a dosing cup, or a 58mm portafilter. The dosing cup is a durable plastic, but there is also a metal dosing cup option.

Original Design

The Turin DF83 is designed in house by the owner of the manufacturing company and is an original design. The burr chamber is uniquely designed to have as little retention as possible.

All Purpose Grinder

Being an all purpose grinder, you will be able to grind beans for a wide range of different brewing methods, from espresso to French Press.

Stepless Adjustment

There are no steps in the adjustment mechanism of the DF83, which means you will have an infinite number of settings between the largest and smallest settings, allowing you to fine tune your grind size as much as you want to.

Metal Dosing Collar

In order to prevent the grinder from making a mess and getting coffee all over the place, the grinder includes a metal dosing cup collar. It can also be flipped over and used with a 58mm portafilter if you prefer to grind right into your portafilter.

Simple to Use, Very Fast, and Wide Grind-size Control

I have been following a few YouTube baristas and coffee aficionados and heard good reviews of the Turin DF83 v2 Single Dose Grinder.

As a coffee drinker, I switch from pour-over/percolator to espresso and sometimes even Turkish coffee every month. I have been following a few YouTube baristas and coffee aficionados and heard good reviews of the Turin DF83 v2 Single Dose Grinder--explicitly referring to the uniformity of the grind and the effects on flavor.

Moreover, I needed (wanted) a grinder to handle different grind sizes to accommodate my coffee taste, ranging from light roast to dark roast, depending on what I am making.

So far, I have ground dark roast for pour-over, percolator, and espresso, and the Turin DF83 v2 has lived up to its name--the grounds are very unformed. The flavor it yields is very delicious to me.

The workflow (grind to clean-up) is so easy that I look forward to trying light and medium roasts next.

If this is your first grinder like it is for me, you will not be disappointed. It may even be the last grinder you need!

DF83 V2

I am very pleased with my DF83 v2! A lot of people say it’s noisy, however I do not think it’s noisy at all. I don’t have much retention and the bellows are very useful. I only use my grinder for espresso, and my shots taste wonderful. When I ordered mine, it was a preorder and I was under the impression it would be about a month until I received it. To my surprise, I got a shipment notification after about a week! I was stoked.

Fantastic Experience!

I started off my espresso game about two years ago. I've moved up to my third machine and this DF83V2 is my third grinder. This is my first flat burr grinder, and I can for sure taste the difference.

I started off with a Breville Smartgrinder Pro. It worked well for a lower end conical burr grinder, but I wanted more, so I moved to the Turin SK40. Then finally I purchased this DF83 V2, and viola, I'm happy and loving the experience.

The grinder is heavy, works great, grinds fast and creates amazing espresso. I love that the adjustments are so simple, and I've been able to dial in my beans quickly and efficiently. I currently have the stock burrs, and while I intend to upgrade them eventually, they stocks burrs do a great job. I purchased the black version, the dosing cup connects to the grinder and there is no spill. I have very low retention thanks to the new version V2, so I'm typically getting out what I put in.

This grinder works great, and fits great in my espresso workflow. Bravo!

Happy Purchase: DF83 v2

As my skills improved at brewing coffee, it was time to retire my entry level electric grinder to the display shelf. It could grind fine enough for espresso -- heck, it did an acceptable job with Turkish coffee -- but it severely lacked the ability to dial in. I still used it for pour over, French press, and batch brewing.

For espresso (and AeroPress and Turkish), I have been using the Kinu M47. I think it's great, except I have grown weary of hand grinding daily. It will remain as my travel grinder.

For six months, I thought my goal of finding an electric grinder that was at least as good as my Kinu, stayed within my budget, and hopefully not be a stepping stone to another investment years later was out of reach.

When I caught wind of second version of the DF83, I was intrigued. I am not one of those people who wants to tinker around, customize, or just make do. I researched it to death, and with the SSP MP burrs, it was at the top of my budget.

The DF83 has been attacking the four very different coffees I currently have, and the espressos have been fantastic. Dialing in has been a breeze. The bellows works great. The static is virtually nil. My one scale only measures to the tenth of a gram, and it tells me there is no retention. My other scale is small enough to fit under my Cafelat Robot, but I used it twice to check retention. The results were 0.05 and 0.03 grams.

I have used it twice for my batch brewer. The grind adjustment for the second effort was pretty darn close already, and produced very nice results. I use the Fellow Shimmy to sift out the fines when doing coarser grinds, and I was amazed how few fines there were. I didn't do a measurement for an exact comparison, but it was visually noticeable. I have no doubt my pour over and French press brews will benefit as well. Going too fine with one of my espresso adjustments tells me it will handle Turkish coffee as well.

I absolutely cannot imagine I will ever need another upgrade ... except me upgrading me.
